1 Je dis donc: Dieu a-t-il rejeté son peuple? Dieu nous en garde: car je suis aussi un Israélite, de la semence d’Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin.

 1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

2 Dieu n’a pas rejeté son peuple lequel il connaissait d’avance. Ne savez-vous pas ce que l’écriture dit d’Élie? comment il fait intercession auprès de Dieu contre Israël, disant,

 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,

3 Seigneur, ils ont tué tes prophètes, et démoli tes autels; et je suis resté seul, et ils en veulent à ma vie.

 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

4 Mais que lui dit la réponse de Dieu? Je me suis réservé sept mille hommes, qui n’ont pas ployé le genou à l’image de Baal.

 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

5 Oui certainement alors en ce moment présent il y a aussi un reste selon l’élection de la grâce.

 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

6 Et si c’est par la grâce, alors ce n’est plus par les œuvres: autrement grâce n’est plus grâce. Mais si c’est par les œuvres, alors ce n’est plus la grâce: autrement œuvre n’est plus œuvre.

 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

7 Quoi alors? Israël n‘a pas obtenu ce qu’il recherche; mais l’élection l’a obtenu, et le reste a été aveuglé

 7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

8 (Selon qu’il est écrit, Dieu leur a donné l’esprit d’apathie, des yeux pour qu’ils ne voient pas, et des oreilles pour qu’ils n’entendent pas); jusqu’à ce jour.

 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

9 Et David dit, Que leur table devienne un filet, et un piège, et une pierre d’achoppement, et une rétribution envers eux:

 9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:

10 Que leurs yeux soient obscurcis, afin qu’ils ne puissent pas voir, et courbe toujours leur dos

 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

11 Je dis alors: Ont-ils trébuché pour qu’ils tombent? Dieu nous en garde: mais plutôt par leur chute le salut est venu aux Gentils, pour les provoquer à la jalousie.

 11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

12 Maintenant si leur chute est la richesse du monde, et leur diminution la richesse des Gentils, combien plus sera leur plénitude?

 12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

13 Car je parle à vous, Gentils, dans la mesure où je suis l’apôtre des Gentils, je magnifie ma charge:

 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

14 Si par quelque moyen je puis provoquer à l’émulation ceux qui sont ma chair, et puisse sauver quelques-uns.

 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

15 Car si leur rejet est la réconciliation du monde, quel sera leur accueil, sinon la vie d’entre les morts?

 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

16 Car si les prémices sont saintes, la masse est aussi sainte: et si la racine est sainte, ainsi sont les branches.

 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

17 Et si quelques-unes des branches sont retranchées, et toi, étant un olivier sauvage, fus greffé parmi elles, et avec elles tu participes à la racine et à la graisse de l’olivier;

 17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

18 Ne te vante pas au détriment des branches. Mais si tu te vantes, tu ne portes pas la racine, mais la racine te porte.

 18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

19 Tu diras alors: Les branches furent retranchées, afin que je puisse y être greffé.

 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.

20 Eh bien; à cause d’incrédulité, elles furent retranchées, et tu es debout par la foi. Ne sois pas hautain, mais crains:

 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

21 Car si Dieu n’a pas épargné les branches naturelles, prends garde de peur qu’il ne t’épargne pas non plus.

 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

22 Regarde donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: sur ceux qui tombèrent, sévérité; mais envers toi, bonté, si tu continues dans sa bonté: autrement toi aussi tu seras coupé.

 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

23 Et eux aussi, s’ils ne demeurent pas encore dans l’incrédulité, seront greffés: car Dieu est capable de les greffer de nouveau.

 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

24 Car si tu as été coupé de l’olivier qui est sauvage de nature, et que tu fus greffé contre nature sur un bon olivier: combien beaucoup plus seront celles-ci, lesquelles sont les branches naturelles, d’être greffées sur leur propre olivier?

 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

25 Car je ne voudrais pas, frères, que vous soyez ignorants de ce mystère, de peur que vous vous pensiez sages en vos propres imaginations; qu’un aveuglement partiel est arrivé à Israël, jusqu’à ce que la plénitude des Gentils soit entrée.

 25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

26 Et ainsi tout Israël sera sauvé: comme il est écrit, Il sortira de Sion le Libérateur, et il détournera l’impiété de Jacob:

 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 Car ceci est mon alliance envers eux, lorsque j’ôterai leurs péchés.

 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

28 En ce qui concerne l’évangile, ils sont ennemis à cause de vous: mais quant à l’élection, ils sont bien-aimés à cause des pères.

 28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.

29 Car les dons et l’appel de Dieu sont sans repentance.

 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

30 Car comme vous autrefois n’avez pas cru Dieu, cependant vous avez maintenant obtenu miséricorde par leur incrédulité:

 30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:

31 Oui certainement ceux-ci aussi maintenant n’ont pas cru, pour que par l'intermédiaire de votre miséricorde, eux aussi puissent obtenir miséricorde.

 31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

32 Car Dieu les a tous relégués dans l’incrédulité, afin qu’il puisse avoir miséricorde envers tous.

 32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

33 Ô la profondeur de la richesse de la sagesse et de la connaissance de Dieu! Combien insondables sont ses jugements, et ses agissements loin d’être découverts!

 33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

34 Car qui a connu l’intention du Seigneur? ou qui a été son conseiller?

 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

35 Ou qui le premier lui a donné, et la pareille lui sera rendue?

 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

36 Car de lui, et par lui, et à lui sont toutes choses: à lui soit gloire à toujours. Amen.

 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
