1 Et la parole de Samuel arriva à tout Israël. Et Israël sortit pour se battre contre les Philistins, et campa près d’Ebenezer ; et les Philistins campèrent à Aphek.

 1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

2 Et les Philistins se rangèrent en bataille contre Israël ; et quand la bataille s’engagea, Israël fut battu par les Philistins, et ils tuèrent en bataille rangée dans la campagne, environ quatre mille hommes.

 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3 ¶ Et lorsque le peuple rentra au camp, les anciens d’Israël dirent : Pourquoi le SEIGNEUR nous a-t-il frappés aujourd’hui devant les Philistins ? Allons chercher à Shiloh (Silo) l’arche de l’alliance du SEIGNEUR, afin qu’elle vienne au milieu de nous, et nous sauve de la main de nos ennemis.

 3 ¶ And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4 Ainsi le peuple envoya à Shiloh (Silo), afin qu’on puisse apporter l’arche de l’alliance du SEIGNEUR des armées, qui demeure entre les chérubins ; et les deux fils d’Eli, Hophni et Phineas, étaient là avec l’arche de l’alliance de Dieu.

 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 Et quand l’arche du SEIGNEUR entra dans le camp, tout Israël jeta un grand cri, si bien que la terre en retentit.

 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

6 Et quand les Philistins, entendirent le bruit du cri, ils dirent : Que veut dire le bruit de ce grand cri dans le camp des Hébreux ? Et ils comprirent que l’arche du SEIGNEUR était venue au camp.

 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

7 Et les Philistins eurent peur, car ils disaient : Dieu est venu au camp. Et ils dirent : Malheur à nous ! car il n’y a jamais eu une telle chose jusqu’à présent.

 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

8 Malheur à nous ! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces puissants Dieux ? Ce sont les Dieux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toutes sortes de plaies dans le désert.

 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

9 Soyez fort, et soyez des hommes, ô vous Philistins, afin que vous ne soyez pas serviteurs des Hébreux, comme ils ont été les vôtres ; soyez des hommes, et combattez.

 9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10 ¶ Et les Philistins combattirent, et Israël fut battu, et chacun s’enfuit dans sa tente ; et il y eut un très grand carnage ; car là tombèrent trente mille fantassins d’Israël.

 10 ¶ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11 Et l’arche de Dieu fut prise ; et les deux fils d’Eli, Hophni et Phineas, moururent.

 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12 ¶ Et un homme de Benjamin s’enfuit de la bataille, et arriva à Shiloh (Silo) ce jour-là, ayant ses vêtements déchirés, et de la terre sur sa tête ;

 12 ¶ And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13 Et quand il arriva, voici, Eli était assis sur un siège le long du chemin, attendant ; car son cœur tremblait à cause de l’arche de Dieu. Et lorsque l’homme entra dans la ville et rapporta la nouvelle, toute la ville gémit bruyamment.

 13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

14 Et quand Eli entendit le bruit de ces pleurs, il dit : Que veut dire ce bruit de tumulte ? Et l’homme vint en hâte, et raconta tout à Eli.

 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

15 Or Eli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, ses yeux étaient si faibles, tellement qu’il ne pouvait plus voir.

 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

16 Et l’homme dit à Eli : Je suis celui qui vient de la bataille ; et je me suis enfui de la bataille aujourd’hui. Et il Eli dit : Qu’est-il arrivé, mon fils ?

 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

17 Et le messager répondit, et dit : Israël a fui devant les Philistins ; et il y a eu un grand carnage parmi le peuple, et tes deux fils, Hophni et Phineas, sont morts aussi, et l’arche de Dieu est prise.

 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

18 Et il arriva, lorsqu’il mentionna l’arche de Dieu, qu’il Eli tomba à la renverse de son siège, à côté de la porte, et son cou se brisa et il mourut ; car c’était un homme âgé et lourd. Il avait jugé Israël quarante ans.

 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19 ¶ Et sa belle-fille, la femme de Phineas, était enceinte, près d’accoucher, et quand elle entendit la nouvelle que l’arche de Dieu était prise, et que son beau-père et son mari étaient morts, elle se courba et entra en travail ; car les douleurs la prirent.

 19 ¶ And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

20 Et comme elle allait mourir, les femmes qui étaient près d’elle, lui dirent : Ne crains pas ; car tu as enfanté un fils. Mais elle ne répondit rien, et ne le regarda pas non plus.

 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

21 Et elle nomma l’enfant Ichabod, disant : La gloire est ôtée d’Israël ; parce que l’arche du SEIGNEUR est prise, et à cause de son beau-père et de son mari.

 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

22 Et elle dit : La gloire est ôtée d’Israël ; car l’arche de Dieu est prise.

 22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
