1 ¶ Et L’arche du SEIGNEUR fut dans le pays des Philistins sept mois.

 1 And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2 Et les Philistins appelèrent les prêtres et les devins, disant : Que ferons-nous de l’arche du SEIGNEUR ? Dites-nous comment nous la renverrons en son lieu.

 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

3 Et ils dirent : Si vous renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, ne la renvoyez pas à vide ; mais ne manquez pas de lui rendre une offrande de transgression ; alors vous serez guéris, et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s’est pas retirée de vous.

 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

4 Et ils dirent : Quelle est l’offrande de transgression que nous lui rendrons ? Ils répondirent : Selon le nombre des seigneurs des Philistins, cinq hémorroïdes d’or, et cinq souris d’or ; car une même plaie a été sur vous tous, et sur vos seigneurs.

 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

5 C’est pourquoi vous ferez des figures de vos hémorroïdes, et des figures des souris qui dévastent le pays, et vous donnerez gloire au Dieu d’Israël ; peut-être allégera-t-il sa main sur vous, et de dessus vos dieux, et sur votre pays.

 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

6 Et pourquoi endurciriez-vous vos cœurs, comme les Égyptiens et Pharaon endurcirent leurs cœurs ? Après qu’il eut accompli de merveilleux exploits parmi eux, ne les laissèrent-ils pas aller et ils partirent ?

 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

7 Maintenant donc faites une charrette neuve, et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent, sur lesquelles aucun joug n’a été mis ; et attelez les vaches à la charrette, et ramenez leurs petits à la maison.

 7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

8 Et prenez l’arche du SEIGNEUR, et mettez-la sur la charrette ; et mettez les ouvrages d’or, que vous lui rendez comme offrande de transgression dans un coffret à côté d’elle, et renvoyez-la, et qu’elle s’en aille.

 8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

9 Et voyez, si elle monte par le chemin de son territoire, vers Bethshemesh, alors c’est lui qui nous a fait ce grand mal ; sinon, nous saurons que ce n’est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, c’était un hasard qui nous est arrivé.

 9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

10 ¶ Et les hommes firent ainsi, et prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient, et les attelèrent à la charrette, et enfermèrent leurs petits à la maison ;

 10 ¶ And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

11 Et ils mirent l’arche du SEIGNEUR sur la charrette, et le coffret, avec les souris d’or et les figures de leurs hémorroïdes.

 11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.

12 Et les vaches prirent immédiatement le chemin de Bethshemesh, et allaient le long de la route, marchant et mugissant, et elles ne se détournèrent ni à main droite ni à gauche ; et les seigneurs des Philistins allèrent après elles jusqu’à la frontière de Bethshemesh.

 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

13 Et ceux de Bethshemesh moissonnaient leur blé dans la vallée ; et ils levèrent les yeux, et virent l’arche, et se réjouirent de la voir.

 13 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

14 Et la charrette arriva au champ de Joshua (Josué), un Bethshemite, et s’arrêta là où il y avait une grande pierre, et ils fendirent le bois de la charrette, et offrirent les vaches en offrande consumée au SEIGNEUR ;

 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.

15 Et les Lévites descendirent l’arche du SEIGNEUR, et le coffret qui était avec dans lequel étaient les ouvrages d’or, et ils les mirent sur la grande pierre ; et les hommes de Bethshemesh offrirent des offrandes consumées et des sacrifices au SEIGNEUR ce même jour.

 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.

16 Et quand les cinq seigneurs des Philistins le virent, ils repartirent à Ekron le même jour.

 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17 Et ce sont là les hémorroïdes d’or que les Philistins rendirent au SEIGNEUR en une offrande de transgression ; pour Ashdod une, pour Gaza une, pour Askelon une, pour Gath une, pour Ekron une.

 17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 Et les souris d’or, selon le nombre de toutes les villes des Philistins appartenant aux cinq seigneurs, tant des villes fortifiées que des villages des campagnes jusqu’à la grande pierre d’Abel, sur laquelle on posa l’arche du SEIGNEUR, laquelle pierre est encore jusqu’à ce jour dans le champ de Joshua (Josué), le Bethshemite.

 18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.

19 ¶ Et il le SEIGNEUR frappa les hommes de Bethshemesh, parce qu’ils avaient regardé dans l’arche du SEIGNEUR ; et il frappa dans le peuple, cinquante mille et soixante-dix hommes. Et le peuple se lamenta, parce que le SEIGNEUR avait frappé le peuple d’un grand massacre.

 19 ¶ And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20 Alors les hommes de Bethshemesh dirent : Qui peut se tenir devant ce saint SEIGNEUR Dieu ? Et vers qui montera-t-il de nous ?

 20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

21 ¶ Et ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kirjathjearim (Kiriath-Jéarim), disant : Les Philistins ont ramené l’arche du SEIGNEUR ; descendez, et faites-la monter vers vous.

 21 ¶ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
