1 Alors Nahash, l’Ammonite, monta, et campa contre Jabeshgilead ; et tous les hommes de Jabesh dirent à Nahash Fais une alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons.

 1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2 Et Nahash, l’Ammonite, leur répondit : Je ferai une alliance avec vous à cette condition que je vous crève à tous l’œil droit, et que je le mette pour outrage sur tout Israël.

 2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3 Et les anciens de Jabesh lui dirent : Donne-nous sept jours de répit, afin que nous puissions envoyer des messagers dans tous les confins d’Israël, et s’il n’y a personne pour nous sauver, alors nous sortirons vers toi.

 3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

4 ¶ Puis les messagers vinrent à Gibeah (Guibeah) de Saul, et dirent ces paroles au peuple ; et tout le peuple éleva sa voix et pleura.

 4 ¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 Et voici, Saul revenait des champs derrière ses bœufs, et il dit : Qu’a le peuple pour qu’il pleure ? Et on lui raconta les paroles des hommes de Jabesh.

 5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

6 Et l’Esprit de Dieu vint sur Saul, quand il entendit ces paroles, et sa colère s’embrasa fort.

 6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7 Et il prit une paire de bœufs, et les coupa en morceaux, et les envoya dans tous les confins d’Israël par les mains des messagers, disant : Quiconque ne sortira et ne suivra Saul et Samuel, on fera de même à ses bœufs. Et la crainte du SEIGNEUR tomba sur le peuple, et ils sortirent comme un seul homme.

 7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

8 Et quand il les dénombra à Bezek, il y avait trois cent mille enfants d’Israël, et trente mille hommes de Judah (Juda).

 8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 Et ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus : Vous direz ainsi aux hommes de Jabeshgilead : Demain, quand le soleil sera chaud, vous aurez reçu l’aide. Et les messagers revinrent, et rapportèrent cela à ceux de Jabesh, et ils s’en réjouirent.

 9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10 C’est pourquoi les hommes de Jabesh dirent aux Ammonites : Demain nous sortirons vers vous, et vous nous ferez tout ce qui vous semblera bon.

 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11 Et il advint le lendemain, que Saul plaça le peuple en trois compagnies, et ils entrèrent au milieu du camp pendant la veille du matin, et ils frappèrent les Ammonites jusqu’à la chaleur du jour ; et il arriva que ceux qui restèrent furent dispersés, si bien qu’il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.

 11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 ¶ Et le peuple dit à Samuel : Qui est-ce qui disait : Saul régnerait-il sur nous ? Amenez-nous ces hommes afin qu’on les mette à mort.

 12 ¶ And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 Et Saul dit : Personne ne sera mis à mort ce jour ; car aujourd’hui le SEIGNEUR a produit le salut en Israël.

 13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

14 Et Samuel dit au peuple : Venez, et allons à Gilgal (Guilgal), et nous y renouvellerons le royaume.

 14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15 Et tout le peuple s’en alla à Gilgal (Guilgal) ; et là, ils établirent Saul pour roi, devant le SEIGNEUR, à Gilgal (Guilgal), et là, ils sacrifièrent des offrandes de paix, devant le SEIGNEUR ; et là, Saul et tous les hommes d’Israël s’y réjouirent grandement.

 15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
