1 Saul avait régné un an ; et après avoir régné deux ans sur Israël,

 1 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

2 Saul se choisit trois mille hommes d’Israël ; dont deux mille étaient avec Saul à Michmash et au mont Bethel, et un millier étaient avec Jonathan à Gibeah (Guibeah) de Benjamin ; et il renvoya le reste du peuple, chacun dans sa tente.

 2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

3 Et Jonathan frappa la garnison des Philistins qui était à Geba (Gueba), et les Philistins l’apprirent. Et Saul sonna de la trompette à travers tout le pays, disant : Que les Hébreux entendent.

 3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

4 Et tout Israël entendit dire que Saul avait frappé la garnison des Philistins, et qu’Israël aussi était devenu une abomination parmi les Philistins. Et le peuple fut convoqué auprès de Saul, à Gilgal (Guilgal).

 4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

5 ¶ Et les Philistins s’assemblèrent pour se battre contre Israël, avec trente mille chariots et six mille cavaliers, et un peuple était comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, une multitude ; et ils montèrent, et campèrent à Michmash, à l’est de Bethaven.

 5 ¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

6 Et lorsque les hommes d’Israël virent qu’ils étaient en difficulté, (car le peuple était inquiet), alors le peuple se cacha dans les cavernes, dans les buissons, dans les rochers, dans les lieux forts et dans les fosses.

 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7 Et quelques-uns des Hébreux passèrent le Jourdain, vers le pays de Gad et de Gilead (Guilead). Quant à Saul, il était encore à Gilgal (Guilgal), et tout le peuple le suivait en tremblant.

 7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 ¶ Et il attendit sept jours, selon le temps marqué que Samuel avait indiqué ; mais Samuel ne venait pas à Gilgal (Guilgal) ; et le peuple s’éloignait de Saul.

8 ¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

9 Et Saul dit : Amenez-moi une offrande consumée et des offrandes de paix. Et il offrit l’offrande consumée.

 9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

10 Et il arriva, qu’aussitôt qu’il eut achevé d’offrir l’offrande consumée, voici, Samuel arriva, et Saul sortit à sa rencontre, afin de le saluer ;

 10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

11 ¶ Et Samuel dit : Qu’as-tu fait ? Et Saul dit : Quand j’ai vu que le peuple s’éloignait de moi, et que tu ne venais pas dans le délai des jours indiqués, et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Michmash,

 11 ¶ And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12 C’est pourquoi j’ai dit : Les Philistins descendront maintenant contre moi à Gilgal (Guilgal), et je n’ai pas supplié le SEIGNEUR ; je me suis forcé donc, et j’ai offert une offrande consumée.

 12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

13 Et Samuel dit à Saul : Tu as agi follement, tu n’as pas gardé le commandement du SEIGNEUR ton Dieu, qu’il t’avait commandé ; car le SEIGNEUR aurait maintenant établi ton royaume sur Israël à toujours.

 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

14 Mais maintenant ton royaume ne subsistera pas ; le SEIGNEUR s’est cherché un homme selon son cœur, et le SEIGNEUR lui a commandé d’être capitaine sur son peuple, parce que tu n’as pas gardé ce que le SEIGNEUR t’avait commandé.

 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

15 Et Samuel se leva, et monta de Gilgal (Guilgal) à Gibeah (Guibeah) de Benjamin. Et Saul dénombra le peuple qui se trouvait avec lui, environ six cents hommes.

 15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

16 Et Saul, et son fils Jonathan, et le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux, demeuraient à Gibeah (Guibeah) de Benjamin, et les Philistins étaient campés à Michmash.

 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

17 ¶ Et les dévastateurs sortirent du camp des Philistins en trois compagnies ; l’une des compagnies prit le chemin qui mène à Ophrah, vers le pays de Shual,

 17 ¶ And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

18 Et une autre compagnie prit le chemin de Bethhoron, et l’autre compagnie prit le chemin de la frontière qui surplombe la vallée de Zeboim, vers le désert.

 18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19 ¶ Or il ne se trouvait pas de forgeron dans tout le pays d’Israël ; car les Philistins avaient dit : De peur que les Hébreux ne fassent des épées ou des lances.

 19 ¶ Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

20 Mais tout Israël descendait vers les Philistins, chacun pour aiguiser son soc, son coutre, et sa hache et son hoyau,

 20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

21 Néanmoins ils avaient une lime pour les hoyaux, et pour les coutres, et pour les fourches, et pour les haches, et pour aiguiser les aiguillons.

 21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

22 Et il arriva qu’au jour de la bataille, il ne se trouva ni épée ni lance dans la main de tout le peuple qui était avec Saul et Jonathan ; toutefois il s’en trouva pour Saul et pour Jonathan, son fils.

 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

23 Et la garnison des Philistins sortit au passage de Michmash.

 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
