1 Or il arriva un jour que Jonathan, le fils de Saul, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes : Viens, et passons vers la garnison des Philistins qui est de l’autre côté. Mais il ne le dit pas à son père.

 1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

2 Et Saul se tenait à l’extrémité de Gibeah (Guibeah), sous un grenadier qui était à Migron ; et le peuple qui était avec lui était d’environ six cents hommes ;

 2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

3 Et Ahiah, le fils d’Ahitub, frère d’Ichabod, fils de Phineas, le fils d’Eli, prêtre du SEIGNEUR à Shiloh (Silo), portait l’éphod. Et le peuple ne savait pas que Jonathan était parti.

 3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’S priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

4 ¶ Et entre les passages par lesquels Jonathan cherchait à passer jusqu’à la garnison des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d’un côté, et une dent de rocher de l’autre côté ; et le nom de l’une était Bozez et le nom de l’autre Seneh.

 4 ¶ And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

5 L’avancée de l’une était située au nord, face à Michmash, et l’autre vers le Sud, face à Gibeah (Guibeah).

 5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.

6 Et Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes : Viens, passons vers la garnison de ces incirconcis ; peut-être que le SEIGNEUR agira pour nous ; car il n’y a rien qui n’empêche le SEIGNEUR de sauver, avec beaucoup de hommes ou avec peu.

 6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

7 Et celui qui portait ses armes lui dit : Fais tout ce qui est dans ton cœur, tourne-toi ; voici, je suis avec toi selon ton cœur.

 7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

8 Alors Jonathan dit : Voici, nous allons passer vers ces hommes, et nous nous montrerons à eux ;

 8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

9 S’ils nous disent : Attendez jusqu’à ce que nous soyons venus à vous ; alors nous nous tiendrons à notre place, et nous ne monterons pas vers eux.

 9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

10 Mais s’ils disent ainsi : Montez vers nous ; alors nous monterons ; car le SEIGNEUR les aura livrés en notre main ; et ce sera pour nous un signe.

 10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.

11 Ils se montrèrent donc tous deux à la garnison des Philistins ; et les Philistins dirent : Voici, les Hébreux sortent des trous où ils s’étaient cachés.

 11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

12 Et les hommes de la garnison crièrent à Jonathan et à celui qui portait ses armes, et dirent : Montez vers nous, et nous vous montrerons quelque chose. Et Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes : Monte après moi ; car le SEIGNEUR les a livrés en la main d’Israël.

 12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

13 Et Jonathan escalada avec ses mains et ses pieds, suivi de celui qui portait ses armes ; et ils es Philistins tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes les tuait après lui.

 13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

14 Et ce premier carnage que fit Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes, fut d’une vingtaine hommes, tués sur environ la moitié d’un arpent de terre qu’un couple de bœufs peut labourer.

 14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

15 Et il y eut un tremblement dans le camp, dans la campagne, et parmi tout le peuple ; la garnison et les dévastateurs, eux aussi tremblèrent, et la terre fut secouée ; ce fut un très grand tremblement.

 15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.

16 Et les sentinelles de Saul, qui étaient à Gibeah (Guibeah) de Benjamin, regardèrent, et voici, la multitude s’écroulait et s’en allait en s’entre-tuant.

 16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17 Alors Saul dit au peuple qui était avec lui : Battez le rappel, et voyez qui est parti parmi nous. Et quand ils comptèrent, voici, Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes. n’étaient pas là.

17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

18 Et Saul dit à Ahiah : Fais approcher l’arche de Dieu. Car l’arche de Dieu était ce jour-là avec les enfants d’Israël.

 18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

19 ¶ Et il arriva, pendant que Saul parlait au prêtre, que le tumulte qui était dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant, et Saul dit au prêtre : Retire ta main.

 19 ¶ And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

20 Et Saul et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, s’assemblèrent, et ils allèrent à la bataille ; et voici, l’épée de chacun des Philistins était contre l’autre ; et il y avait une très grande confusion.

 20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

21 De plus, les Hébreux qui étaient avec les Philistins jusqu’alors, lesquels montèrent des environs avec eux dans le camp, eux aussi se tournèrent pour être avec les Israélites qui étaient avec Saul et Jonathan.

 21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Pareillement tous les hommes d’Israël qui étaient cachés sur le mont Ephraim (Éphraïm), lorsqu’ils entendirent que les Philistins fuyaient, eux aussi les poursuivirent durement dans la bataille.

 22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23 Et le SEIGNEUR sauva Israël ce jour-là ; et la bataille s’étendit jusqu’ au-delà de Bethaven.

 23 So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.

24 ¶ Et les hommes d’Israël furent inquiets ce jour-là, car Saul avait adjuré le peuple, disant : Maudit soit l’homme qui mangera quelque nourriture que ce soit jusqu’au soir, afin que je puisse me venger de mes ennemis. De sorte que personne de tout le peuple ne goûta d’aucune nourriture.

 24 ¶ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

25 Et tous ceux du pays vinrent dans une forêt, où il y avait du miel à la surface du sol.

 25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

26 Et lorsque le peuple entra dans la forêt, voici, du miel coulait, mais nul ne porta la main à sa bouche ; car le peuple avait peur du serment.

 26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

27 Mais Jonathan n’avait pas entendu lorsque son père avait fait jurer le peuple ; et il étendit le bout du bâton qu’il avait en sa main, et le trempa dans un rayon de miel, et ramena sa main à sa bouche, et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

 27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

28 Alors quelqu’un du peuple répondit, et dit : Ton père a fait expressément jurer le peuple, en disant : Maudit soit l’homme qui mangera quelque nourriture que ce soit aujourd’hui. Et le peuple était affaibli.

 28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.

29 Alors Jonathan dit : Mon père a troublé le pays ; voyez, je vous prie, comme mes yeux ont été éclaircis, parce que j’ai goûté un peu de ce miel ;

 29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 Combien plus, si le peuple avait aujourd’hui mangé librement du butin de ses ennemis qu’il a trouvé ? Car la défaite des Philistins n’aurait-elle pas été plus grande ?

 30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 Et ils frappèrent ce jour-là les Philistins depuis Michmash jusqu’à Aijalon, et le peuple fut très affaibli.

 31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

32 Et le peuple se jeta sur le butin, et ils prirent des moutons, et des bœufs et des veaux, et ils les égorgèrent sur le sol ; et le peuple les mangeait avec le sang.

 32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

33 ¶ Et on le rapporta à Saul, en disant : Voici, le peuple pèche contre le SEIGNEUR, en ce qu’ils mangent (la chair) avec le sang. Et il dit : Vous avez transgressé ; roulez une grande pierre vers moi aujourd’hui.

 33 ¶ Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

34 Et Saul dit : Dispersez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites-leur Amenez-moi chacun son bœuf, et chacun son mouton ; et égorgez-les ici, et mangez, et ne péchez pas contre le SEIGNEUR en mangeant avec le sang. Et tout le peuple amena chacun son bœuf avec lui cette nuit-là, et ils les égorgèrent là.

 34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

35 Et Saul bâtit un autel au SEIGNEUR ; ce fut le premier autel qu’il bâtit au SEIGNEUR.

 35 And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

36 ¶ Et Saul dit : Descendons de nuit après les Philistins, et pillons-les jusqu’à la lumière du matin, et ne laissons pas un homme de reste. Et ils dirent : Fais tout ce qui te semble bon. Alors le prêtre dit : Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.

 36 ¶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

37 Et Saul demanda conseil à Dieu : Descendrai-je après les Philistins ? Les livreras-tu en la main d’Israël ? Mais il ne lui répondit pas ce jour-là.

 37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

38 Et Saul dit : Approchez ici, vous tous les chefs du peuple ; et sachez et voyez comment ce péché est arrivé aujourd’hui ;

 38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

39 Car, de même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, lui qui sauve Israël, bien que cela a été fait par Jonathan mon fils, il mourra certainement. Mais il n’y eut aucun homme parmi tout le peuple qui lui répondit.

 39 For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

40 Puis il dit à tout Israël : Soyez d’un côté, et moi et Jonathan, mon fils nous serons de l’autre côté. Et le peuple dit à Saul : Fais ce qui te semble bon.

 40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

41 Et Saul dit au SEIGNEUR Dieu d’Israël : Donne un parfait sort. Et Saul et Jonathan furent désignés, mais le peuple échappa.

 41 Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

42 Et Saul dit : Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathan, mon fils. Et Jonathan fut désigné.

 42 And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43 Alors Saul dit à Jonathan : Dis-moi ce que tu as fait. Et Jonathan lui raconta, et dit : Je n’ai goûté qu’un peu de miel avec le bout du bâton qui était en ma main, et voici, je dois mourir.

 43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

44 Et Saul répondit : Que Dieu fasse ainsi et plus encore ; car certainement tu mourras, Jonathan.

 44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

45 Mais le peuple dit à Saul : Jonathan mourrait-il, lui qui a apporté cette grande délivrance en Israël ? À Dieu ne plaise de même que le SEIGNEUR est vivant, il ne tombera pas à terre un seul des cheveux de sa tête ; car c’est avec Dieu qu’il a agi en ce jour. Ainsi le peuple secouru Jonathan, et il ne mourut pas.

 45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

46 Puis Saul remonta après avoir poursuivi les Philistins, et les Philistins s’en allèrent en leur lieu.

 46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 ¶ Saul prit donc possession du royaume sur Israël, et fit la guerre de tous côtés contre ses ennemis, contre Moab et contre les enfants d’Ammon, et contre Edom, contre les rois de Zobah, et contre les Philistins ; partout où il se tournait il les mortifiait.

 47 ¶ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.

48 Et il rassembla une armée, et frappa les Amalekites, et délivra Israël des mains de ceux qui le pillaient.

 48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

49 Or les fils de Saul étaient Jonathan, Ishui et Melchishua ; et les noms de ses deux filles étaient, le nom de l’aînée était Merab, et le nom de la cadette Michal ;

 49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

50 Et le nom de la femme de Saul était Ahinoam, la fille d’Ahimaaz ; et le nom du capitaine de son armée était Abner, le fils de Ner, oncle de Saul.

 50 And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

51 Et Kish était le père de Saul, et Ner, le père d’Abner, était le fils d’Abiel.

 51 And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

52 Et il y eut une guerre cruelle contre les Philistins durant tous les jours de Saul ; et quand Saul voyait quelque homme fort, et quelque homme vaillant, il le prenait auprès de lui.

 52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
