1 Or il arriva après la mort de Saul (Saül), quand David fut revenu de la défaite des Amalékites, que David demeura à Ziklag (Tsiklag) deux jours ;

 1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

2 Et il arriva qu’au troisième jour, voici, un homme qui revenait du camp, d’auprès de Saul (Saül), ses vêtements déchirés et de la terre sur sa tête ; et il fut ainsi, quand il arriva vers David, il tomba à erre et fit obédience.

 2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

3 Et David lui dit : D’où viens-tu ? Et il lui dit : Je me suis échappé du camp d’Israël.

 3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

4 Et David lui dit : Qu’est-il arrivé ? Je te prie, raconte-moi. Et il répondit : Que le peuple s’est enfui de la bataille, et que beaucoup sont tombés morts ; et Saul (Saül) et Jonathan, son fils, aussi sont morts.

 4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

5 Et David dit au jeune homme qui lui racontait : Comment sais-tu que Saul (Saül) et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts ?

 5 And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

6 Et le jeune homme qui lui racontait, dit : Comme je me trouvais par chancesur le mont Gilboa (Guilboa), voici, Saul (Saül) s’appuyait sur sa lance ; et voici, les chariots et les cavaliers le poursuivaient avec acharnement.

 6 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

7 Et quand il regarda derrière lui, il me vit, et m’appela ; et je répondis : Me voici.

 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

8 Et il me dit : Qui es-tu ? Et je lui répondis : Je suis Amalékite.

 8 And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

9 Et il me dit encore : Tiens-toi, je te prie, sur moi et tue-moi, car l’angoisse m’a saisi, parce que ma vie est encore toute en moi.

 9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

10 Je me suis donc tenu sur lui et je l’ai tué ; par ce que j’étais sûr qu’il ne pouvait pas vivre après être ainsi tombé ; et j’ai pris la couronne qui était sur sa tête, et le bracelet qui était à son bras, et je les ai apportés ici à mon seigneur.

 10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

11 Alors David prit ses vêtements, et les déchira ; et de même firent tous les hommes qui étaient avec lui.

 11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

12 Et ils menèrent deuil, et pleurèrent, et jeûnèrent jusqu’au soir à cause de Saul (Saül), et de Jonathan, son fils, et du peuple du SEIGNEUR, et de la maison d’Israël ; parce qu’ils étaient tombés par l’épée.

 12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

13 ¶ Et David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait raconté cela : D’où es-tu ? Et il répondit : Je suis fils d’un étranger, un Amalékite.

 13 ¶ And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

14 Et David lui dit : Comment n’as-tu pas craint d’étendre ta main pour tuer l’oint du SEIGNEUR ?

 14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’S anointed?

15 Et David appela l’un des jeunes hommes, et lui dit : Approche-toi, et jette-toi sur lui. Et il le frappa, et il mourut.

 15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

16 Et David lui dit : Ton sang soit sur ta tête, car ta bouche a témoigné contre toi, disant : J’ai tué l’oint du SEIGNEUR.

 16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’S anointed.

17 ¶ Et David prononça cette lamentation sur Saul (Saül) et sur Jonathan, son fils ;

 17 ¶ And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

18 (Ainsi il ordonna d’enseigner aux enfants de Judah, l’usage de l’arc ; voici, elle est écrite dans le livre de Jasher).

 18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

19 La beauté d’Israël est tuée sur tes hauts lieux. Comment sont tombés les hommes puissants !

 19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

20 Ne le racontez pas dans Gath, ne le publiez pas dans les rues d’Askalon ; de peur que les filles des Philistins ne se réjouissent, de peur que les filles des incirconcis ne triomphent.

 20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Vous montagnes de Gilboa (Guilboa), qu’il n’y ait ni rosée, ni pluie sur vous, ni de champs d’offrandes ; car c’est là qu’a été jeté le bouclier des puissants, le bouclier de Saul (Saül), comme s’il n’avait pas été oint d’huile.

 21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

22 Du sang des tués et de la graisse des puissants, l’arc de Jonathan ne revenait pas ; et l’épée de Saul (Saül) ne retournait pas à vide.

 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

23 Saul (Saül) et Jonathan étaient aimables et plaisants pendant leur vie, et n’ont pas été séparés dans leur mort ; ils étaient plus rapides que les aigles, ils étaient plus forts que les lions.

 23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

24 Vous, filles d’Israël, pleurez sur Saul (Saül), qui vous revêtait d’écarlate, et d’autres délices, qui vous mettait des ornements d’or sur vos vêtements.

 24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25 Comment sont tombés les puissants au milieu de la bataille ! Ô Jonathan, tu as été tué sur tes hauts lieux.

 25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

26 Je suis malheureux à cause de toi, Jonathan, mon frère ; tu as été pour moi très plaisant ; ton amour m’était merveilleux, surpassant l’amour des femmes.

 26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27 Comment sont tombés les puissants, et comment ont péri les armes de la guerre !

 27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
