1 Et il arriva, après cela, que David interrogea le SEIGNEUR, disant : Monterai-je dans une des villes de Judah ? Et le SEIGNEUR lui dit : Monte. Et David dit : Où monterai-je ? Et il dit à Hebron (Hébron).

 1 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

2 David monta donc là, et ses deux femmes aussi, Ahinoam, la Jezreelite et Abigail, femme de Nabal, la Carmelite.

 2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

3 Et ses hommes qui étaient avec lui, David les fit monter, chacun avec sa maisonnée, et ils demeurèrent dans les villes de Hebron (Hébron).

 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

4 Et les hommes de Judah vinrent, et là, ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Judah. Et ils informèrent David, disant : Que les hommes de Jabesgilead étaient ceux qui avaient enterré Saul (Saül).

 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.

5 ¶ Et David envoya des messagers aux hommes de Jabesgilead, et leur fit dire : Bénis soyez-vous du SEIGNEUR, de ce que vous avez fait preuve de cette bonté envers votre seigneur, savoir Saul (Saül), et que vous l’avez enterré.

 5 ¶ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

6 Et maintenant que le SEIGNEUR montre bonté et vérité envers vous. Et moi aussi je vous rendrai cette bonté, parce que vous avez fait cela.

 6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

7 C’est pourquoi maintenant que vos mains soient fortifiées, et soyez des hommes vaillants ; car votre maître Saul (Saül) est mort, et la maison de Judah m’a oint pour être roi sur elle.

 7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8 ¶ Mais Abner, le fils de Ner, capitaine de l’armée de Saul (Saül), prit Ishbosheth, le fils de Saul (Saül), et le fit passer à Mahanaim ;

 8 ¶ But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

9 Et il l’établit roi sur Gilead, sur les Ashurites, et sur Jezreel, et sur Ephraim (Éphraïm), et sur Benjamin, et sur tout Israël.

 9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

10 Ishbosheth, le fils de Saul (Saül), était âgé de quarante ans quand il commença à régner sur Israël, et il régna deux ans. Seule la maison de Judah suivit David.

 10 Ishbosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

11 Et le temps pendant lequel David fut roi à Hebron (Hébron) sur la maison de Judah fut de sept ans et six mois.

 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

12 ¶ Et Abner, le fils de Ner, et les serviteurs d’Ishbosheth, le fils de Saul (Saül), sortirent de Mahanaim vers Gibeon (Guibeon).

 12 ¶ And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

13 Et Joab, le fils de Zeruiah, et les serviteurs de David sortirent ; et ils se rencontrèrent vers le réservoir de Gibeon (Guibeon) et ils s’assirent les uns d’un côté du réservoir, les autres de l’autre côté du réservoir.

 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

14 Et Abner dit à Joab : Que ces jeunes hommes se lèvent maintenant, et qu’ils jouent devant nous. Et Joab dit : Qu’ils se lèvent.

 14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

15 Ils se levèrent donc, et s’avancèrent au nombre de douze pour Benjamin, lesquels représentaient Ishbosheth, le fils de Saul (Saül), et douze des serviteurs de David.

 15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16 Et chacun saisissant son adversaire par la tête, et passa son épée dans le flanc de son adversaire, ainsi ils tombèrent tous ensemble ; c’est pourquoi ce lieu fut appelé Helkathhazzurim, qui est près de Gibeon (Guibeon).

 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

17 Et il y eut, ce jour-là, une très rude bataille, et Abner fut battu, ainsi que les hommes d’Israël, devant les serviteurs de David.

 17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18 ¶ Et il y avait là trois fils de Zeruiah, Joab, Abishai et Asahel ; et Asahel avait le pied aussi léger qu’un chevreuil effaré.

 18 ¶ And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

19 Et Asahel poursuivit Abner, et il ne se détourna ni à main droite ni à gauche en poursuivant Abner.

 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

20 Puis Abner regarda derrière lui et dit : Est-ce toi, Asahel ? Et il répondit : Je le suis.

 20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.

21 Et Abner lui dit : Détourne-toi à main droite ou à gauche, et saisis un de ces jeunes hommes, et prends pour toi son armure. Mais Asahel ne voulut pas se détourner de lui.

 21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.

22 Et Abner dit encore à Asahel : Détourne-toi de me poursuivre ; pourquoi te frapperai-je à terre ? et comment lèverais-je ma face devant Joab, ton frère ?

 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

23 Néanmoins il refusa de se détourner, c’est pourquoi Abner le frappa sous la cinquième côte avec la partie antérieure de sa lance, si bien que sa lance lui sortit par derrière ; et il tomba là et mourut sur place ; et il arriva, que tous ceux qui venaient au lieu où Asahel était tombé mort s’arrêtaient.

 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

24 Joab aussi et Abishai poursuivirent Abner, et le soleil se couchait quand ils arrivèrent à la colline d’Ammah, qui s’étend devant Giah près du chemin du désert de Gibeon (Guibeon).

 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 ¶ Et les enfants de Benjamin s’assemblèrent derrière Abner, et formèrent une troupe, et se tinrent sur le sommet d’une colline.

 25 ¶ And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

26 Alors Abner cria à Joab, et dit : L’épée dévorera-t-elle à toujours ? Ne sais-tu pas qu’il y aura de l’amertume à la fin ? Et combien de temps y aura-t-il avant que tu ne dises au peuple qu’il retourne de poursuivre ses frères ?

 26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

27 Et Joab dit : Comme Dieu est vivant, si tu avais ainsi parlé, certainement dès le matin, le peuple se serait retiré, chacun de la poursuite de son frère.

 27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

28 Joab sonna donc de la trompette, et tout le peuple s’arrêta ; et ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël et ne continuèrent plus à se battre.

 28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

29 Et Abner et ses hommes marchèrent toute cette nuit-là à travers la plaine, et passèrent le Jourdain, et traversèrent tout le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaim.

 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.

30 Et Joab revint de poursuivre Abner ; et quand il eut assemblé tout le peuple, on trouva que des serviteurs de David, il manquait dix-neuf hommes et Asahel.

 30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

31 Mais les serviteurs de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes de Benjamin et des hommes d’Abner.

 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

32 Et ils emportèrent Asahel, et l’enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père, qui était à Bethlehem. Et Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit, et ils arrivèrent à Hebron (Hébron) au point du jour.

 32 ¶ And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
